Across The Board has been been running around inside of my head for some time...I finally made it happen. One of the key aspects about my art is the amount of movement I can develop through line. I began this piece by deciding that it would be a total of eight feet wide. (This is the first of two sections, the other one is still in the works.)

My goal is to create an intimate conversation with the viewer so I try not to work too large. I designed this hanging 'sculpture' to glide in and out from the wall. It reaches 21" high by 96" wide, allowing the viewer to take their time as they engage with each individual piece. The content is filled with images from nature along with abstract shapes. Each panel was created by drawing with an X-ACTO knife into boards made of India Ink and clay. The magic happens when I drag my knife through the layers, slowly but surely patterns begin to emerge. Values are achieved by varying the pressure with my tool, and textures by painting with acrylic artist color. I hope that you see something new in Across The Board every time you view it.

This summers' temperatures must have been perfect to facilitate the display of lilies surrounding our home. I am in the process of creating 96 views (finished piece 84"x40"), everything from a lily in full bloom to the aftermath of shriveled up petals or 'tepals'. I've completed six so far adding color to some and letting others stand alone as black and white studies. What surprised me is the range of colors, deep blues and purples, bright oranges and yellows…absolutely stunning!

My friends, Barbara and Rich, asked to purchase my original Composition of a Coleus. I said that it belonged to someone else, so they commissioned me to create a new one. The finished piece wound up a bit different from my first one in that it has a whole lot less color. In its place you see the process of how layers are developed. By adding just the right amount of color, the shapes build on each other creating a symphony of contrast and patterns. Which is fitting, because their home is filled with music streaming from a sound system that has to be heard to be believed. In addition, no matter where you look you are surrounded by beauty, from their gardens to their incredible art collection. Opus Coleus has found the perfect home.

I am beginning a new series called Veggies, the first of which is the top of a Beet. I am pretty excited about mixing Colored Inks with the Black scratchboard. The backgrounds will all be covered in Black Enamel Paint creating the texture and depth of soil.

I found so much detail looking deep into this Iris flower, developing a strong sense of movement through the shapes and textures as they wrapped around themselves. The multiple layers ultimately formed an interesting abstract. A background of Black Enamel paint, applied with an irregular pattern, serves as a stark contrast with the fine lines of the flower. This piece was used for the cover of the book, Transatlantic, by New York Times Bestseller, Colum McCann.

One of the many gifts of having a mild winter is being able to easily find bits of nature just waiting to be drawn. Leaves all curled up, evolving into shapes far more interesting than their first incarnation. Following the twists and turns of this leaf, letting it fall off of the page, made for a really interesting composition.

Pine cones laying amongst a pile of needles are a frequent site outside our home. They are one of those hearty signs of winter, thriving despite the elements. Multiple leaf-like shapes fold over one another, creating pockets of contrast and texture. The needles compliment the pine cone's mass with their thin lines, spaced out along a narrow stem. It's natures poetry unfolding before our eyes.

I have been intrigued with using Black Claybords as sculpture. They have a bit of depth to them both by their very nature and by creating dimension through line. I haven't used a jigsaw in years, but going around the Thistle was easier than I thought it would be. Can you notice that I even went around the little hairs at the top? Now I know I can achieve this technique, can't wait to apply it to my next piece of art!

This flower has so much energy. I love the constant movement, the gorgeous colors, it seems to jump right off of the page! I am so glad that it went to a good home!

These leaves are interesting in and of themselves. Coming in close makes them infinitely more interesting! I tried to capture the variegated leaves with their sharp contrasting reds, greens, yellows, maroons, and purples. They almost appear as if someone has taken a paintbrush to them. Of course, that's what I ultimately did after drawing them!

These Columbines have an incredible amount of movement, taking turns layering over each other. Working within a square format makes it challenging in terms of composition. I needed to edit just how many flowers would fill the space. Adding a touch of color to the finished piece creates energy without becoming too overpowering.
